Frequently Asked Questions to Get your Glow on!

 

How does it work?

Sunless tanning solution contains dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar based derivative from sugar cane and sugar beets approved by the FDA and is the key ingredient in most sunless tanners. The bronzing you see is a result of a chemical reaction between the DHA and the amino acids in the outer layers of your skin, which creates a natural looking tan. You will see the cosmetic bronzer as soon as the spray is applied. Your tone’s color will continue to develop over the next 8 to 12 hours.

 

Make it last . . .

A custom spray tan should last anywhere from 5 to 7 days. Proper skincare before and after makes a huge difference in how long it will last. . . see our tanning tips.

 

Worried about looking orange?

We take great care in making you look fabulous! Our estheticians will help you choose a color that is right for your skin tone. Norvell has formulated its solutions with cosmetic violet brown based bronzers to say goodbye to orange. Just remember not tan too frequently or overapply tanning products, it will dry your skin and may give your skin that unwanted orange tint.

 

What do I wear during the appointment and afterward?

You can wear as much or as little as you like. Some come in swim suits, others birthday suits. We recommend wearing dark, loose fitting clothing for after your tan to avoid any marks from the solution. The bronzing additives usually wash out but there is always a chance of staining so please chose clothes ready for a tan. We also recommend wearing flip flops or sandals afterward rather than socks and shoes, which may cause streaks.

 

Tanning for a special day in your life?

We recommend tanning a day or two before your special event. If you prefer the evening before your event, we recommend you wait until the next day to shower and rise off. This will give your tan time to develop and the rinse will reduce the chances of solution transferring to clothes. Please plan all your beauty appointments before your tanning appointment: including mani-pedi’s, facials, and massages to prevent losing your tan.

 

Tanning Tips and Maintenance

 

The Night Before your Tan . . .

 

Exfoliate your skin thoroughly to remove dead skin and provide a new, smooth surface. This will help ensure an even, natural looking tan and will help it last longer. Do not use oil-based scrubs, soaps, or lotions before your appointment.

 

Shave or wax at least 24 hours (shaving) to 48 hours (waxing) hours before your tan to reduce redness and let your pores close. Open pores will trap solution and make your skin appear speckled with tiny dots. Do not wax immediately after your spray tan or before your initial shower.

 

The Day of Your Tan

 

• Avoid swimming, vigorous exercise and showering within five hours of your appointment.

 

• Please do not use lotion, deodorant, perfume, or makeup, they act as a barrier on the skin.

 

• After your spray tan, wear loose fitting, dark clothes and flip flops while your tan continues to develop.

 

• Love mani-pedi’s? Just make sure to have your appointment before you tan.

 

After your Tan

 

Take care of that gorgeous glow, it will last longer . . .

 

1. Stay dry: avoid anything that makes you wet for the first 8 to 12 hours, including showers, activities that cause sweating, and even the rain outside.

2. Do not shower for at least 12 hours. After your spray tanning session, your color will continue to develop for 8 to 10 hours. During your first shower, we recommend rinsing only. You may see some excess color wash off, which is perfectly normal.

3. While you are enjoying your tan, shower with a mild soap and pat dry, do not rub

4. Do not shave for at least 12 hours after your spray tan and minimize shaving

5. Do not exfoliate until you are ready to remove your tan

6. Ocean & pools: just remember any long period in water will fade your tan

7. Always use an SPF when out in the sun

8. Use an extender lotion: this will help your tan last while moisturizing your skin
